The Emergency Department at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda provides an Adult and Paediatric emergency service for the populations of Louth, Meath, Monaghan and North County Dublin. The department treated 72,307 patients in 2024 with approx. 30% of these paediatric presentations. The department is the trauma centre for the North East and one of the busiest nationally. The department has established Advanced Nurse Practitioner services in Minor Injuries, Rapid Assessment and Treatment and Acute Medicine. We have undertaken a major capital development project, which has seen the expansion of the Emergency Department incorporating resuscitation rooms, treatment areas, and three high observations bays, a Clinical Decision Making Unit (CDU) and an expanded Paediatric ED and designated Minor Injury Unit. The Emergency Department division includes the Acute Medical Assessment Unit (AMAU), and Acute Medicine, Admission, Treatment and Investigation Unit (ATIU), the Dundalk Injury Unit as well as both adult and paediatric Emergency Departments. The department has two clinical facilitators, 1 of which is Paediatric, who will provide orientation to the department, and facilitate the many continual professional development (CPD) opportunities available. Courses include the Foundation Course in the Assessment and Management of the Acutely Ill Adult, PG Diploma in Paediatric / Adult Emergency Nursing and ACLS.
