The new appointment to the Surgical Hub in Swords will provide clinical leadership, driving high standards for patient care and actively leading service improvement to maximize efficiency and patient experience.
The role involves setting up safe, streamlined care pathways; collaborating across multiple clinical and administrative teams; and fostering a culture of continuous professional development and innovation.
Strong leadership is essential to ensure performance targets are met, resources are managed effectively, and the hospital delivers timely, high-quality elective surgery to the region’s large and growing population.
In Connolly Hospital, surgical activity has increased considerably over the last number of years, including emergency, in-patient, theatre, day case and outpatient activity. This new post will allow the current high standard of care provided to be maintained.
With the establishment of the National Elective Surgery Programme there is a greater emphasis on bed utilization, AvLOS, Productive Theatre and National Audit of Surgical Mortality.

Average yearly In-Patients treated: 3,100
Average yearly Day Cases treated: 2,345
Average yearly Out-Patient attendance: 5,552
The appointee will develop the care pathways for ambulatory patients in general surgery in the Surgical Hub in Swords and will provide leadership of the emergency care team and the emergency general surgical theatre in Connolly Hospital. This will improve patient experience times (PET) by allowing patients quick access to elective and emergency care
Professional Qualifications
A candidate must, on the latest date for receiving completed aplicaion forms for the office have:-
(a) Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of general surgery.
and
(b) Two years certified postgrad raining in gastrointestinal surgery.
Health
A candidate for and any person holding the post must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the post and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Character
A candidate for and any person holding the post must be of good character.
Age
Age restriction shall only apply to a candidate where he/she is not classified as a new entrant (within the meaning of the Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2004). A candidate who is not classified as a new entrant must be under 65 years of age on the first day of the month in which the latest date for receiving completed application forms in the office occurs.
Entry to competition and subsequent appointment
For the purposes of eligibility for entry to any competition or recruitment process associated with this post:
(i) Applicants who have completed specialist training but who are not registered as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland may participate, provided they have applied to the Medical Council for registration before the closing date of the competition.
(ii) applicants currently in employment as Senior or Specialist Registrars in HSE or HSE-funded agencies may participate in the competition on the basis that, on the latest date for receipt of applications, they are within 6 months (26 weeks) of certification of completion of specialist training and that evidence for same is provided from the relevant recognised postgraduate medical training body in writing.
