The HSE has created six new health regions. Each region is responsible for providing both hospital and community care for the people in that area. Bringing community health services and hospitals together means we can take a more patient-centred approach to healthcare.
HSE Dublin and North East provides health and social care to North Dublin, Louth, Meath, Monaghan and most areas of Cavan.
HSE Dublin and North East Region includes the following hospitals;
Connolly Hospital
Connolly Hospital is located in the West Dublin Village of Blanchardstown. It services a catchment population of 331,000 in Dublin West (including Finglas West and Lucan), North Kildare and South County Meath, and is one of the fastest growing catchment population areas in the country. Connolly Hospital is a 400 bed Dublin Academic Teaching Hospital providing a range of acute medical and surgical clinical services, national Bowel Screen services, acute psychiatric services, psychiatry of old age residential and day services designated residential centres for older persons care, older person day care, outpatient services, diagnostic and support services. Emergency acute general clinical services are provided on a 365 day, 24 hour basis.
Anaesthetics Services
Connolly Hospital has 10.5 WTE permanent Consultant Anaesthetists and 1 temporary post. 9 of the posts have a full time commitment, 2 posts are joint appointments with Rotunda Maternity Hospital and 1 post has a joint appointment with Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital.
There are 15 Anaesthesia NCHDs attached to the hospital of which 4 posts are recognised for training by the College of Anaesthesiologists.
The Department of Anaesthesiology provides anaesthesia services to 4 operating theatres and 7 Intensive Care Unit beds. The hospital has constructed a 5th theatre for emergencies which is awaiting opening.
There is a planned expansion of theatre elective services. The provision of this post will support extended days in theatre to increase theatre capacity. This post will fulfil the service requirements.
In addition, anaesthesia services are provided in the Cardiology Department, Emergency Department and Radiology Department. There are currently 2 formal pre-operative assessment clinics per week. There has been significant expansion of general orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery, urologic surgery and gynaecology services in Connolly hospital in recent years.
The RSCI Hospitals Group Plastic Surgery Trauma Service was established in Connolly Hospital in September 2016 and provides plastic surgery trauma services for the region. Patients are referred on an agreed care pathway. Orthopaedic surgeons employed at CHB have joint appointments between CHB and Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital. There has been an additional recently employed orthopaedic surgeon in CHB and this post will further develop and strengthen links between both hospitals and allow for continuity of patient care.
CHB accepts hip fractures from Cavan General Hospital and once patients are surgically treated and medically optimized they return to Cavan General. Critical care services have expanded in Connolly Hospital in recent years due to an increase in population as well as an increase in demand for critical care services due to the covid pandemic.

Age
Age restriction shall only apply to a candidate where he/she is not classified as a new entrant (within the meaning of the Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2004). A candidate who is not classified as a new entrant must be under 65 years of age on the first day of the month in which the latest date for receiving completed application forms for the office occurs.
Health
A candidate for and any person holding the post must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the post and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Character
A candidate for and any person holding the post must be of good character.
