Job Purpose

The purpose of the post is to be a member of the senior laboratory management team, be responsible for the quality of work under their supervision and carry out their duties in accordance with laboratory policy

The salary scale for the post is: (01/02/2026)

€68,007, €71,084, €73,817, €76,612, €79,489, €82,319, €83,937, €86,853, €89,790

 

There is currently 1 permanent, whole-time vacancy available in Connolly Hospital

A panel may be formed as a result of this campaign for Medical Scientist, Senior (Histology), Connolly Hospital from which current and future, permanent and specified purpose vacancies of full or part-time duration may be filled..

 

Demonstrate practical experience in the following areas, as relevant to the role:

  • Histology specimen processing including specimen labelling, assisting pathologist lead cut-up, performing medical scientist lead cut-up, tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, coverslipping, slide issuing and frozen sectioning.
  • Tissue staining procedures including routine and special stains.
  • Automated Immunohistochemistry techniques.
  • Cytology specimen processing

Essential Criteria

Candidates must have at the latest date of application have:

 

1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience etc.

 (i) Be registered, or be eligible for registration, on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU

                                                     AND

 (ii) Possess a Master’s Qualification (Msc) or equivilant (NFQ Level 9) postgraduate qualification on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) maintained by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) in a Science related discipline, as relevant to the role. Validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine.

 

                                                      OR

 (iii) An equivalent qualification at minimum Level 9 validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM).

 

                                                      OR

 (iv) Possess Fellowship of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine awarded before July 2018.

 

                                                      OR

(v) Have attained the Fellowship examination of the Institute of Biomedical Science (Awarded prior to 1999).   

                                                      

                                                     AND

 (vi) Possess four years full time clinical experience as a medical scientist in a clinical diagnostic laboratory of a modern hospital since qualifying as a medical scientist.    

                                                       

                                                     AND

 (vii) Demonstrate evidence of Continuing Professional Development relevant to the required area of specialism/role. 

 

                                                     AND

 (viii) Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

                                                     AND

(ix) Provide proof of Statutory Registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU before a contract of employment can be issued (Applicable to Section 38 applicants only)

 

 

2. Health

A candidate for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

 

 3. Character

Each candidate for and any person holding the office must be of good character.
