Details of Service
Cavan General Hospital is an acute general hospital incorporating an Obstetric Consultant Led Unit and a Midwifery Led Unit. The hospital provides maternity and gynaecological services primarily to the catchment areas of counties Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Longford and North Meath.
The Obstetric department provides:
• Antenatal bookings and return antenatal clinics.
• Outreach bookings and return antenatal clinics.
• Maternity day ward facility.
• Antenatal and Postnatal Parent craft Education.
• Breastfeeding support and advice.
• Antenatal in-patient care.
• Low and High risk intra-partum care including 24 hour epidural service.
• Postnatal care for mothers and babies.
• Special care baby unit.
• Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit and Gynaecological Services.
• Obstetric ultrasound scanning.
• RAMP supported care
• cAMP Postnatal care
• TOP service
The Midwifery Led Unit provides:
Antenatal. Intrapartum and Postnatal care to low risk women. Care is delivered by a team of midwives whose practice is guided by regional evidence based guidelines. If there is any deviation from the normal at any stage of pregnancy, delivery, or post-natal period the mother or neonate is transferred to consultant led care. The facility has two birthing and overnight rooms set in a homely environment.
Special Care Baby Unit provides:
Neonatal care to babies born electively after 30 weeks gestation and at earlier gestations as unplanned deliveries. Neonates requiring intensive care are ventilated, stabilised and transferred to one of the Dublin Neonatal Units primarily Rotunda Hospital and return to Cavan for high dependency and special care until discharge. The capacity of the unit is 5 cots and 1 isolation room with one overnight stay room for mothers.
