Job Purpose

The new state-of-the-art laboratory in Connolly Hospital is located on the top floor of the RCSI medical school building. Extending to 1300 square meters, it is designed to optimize workflow and technical innovation, while also being designed to be ascetically pleasing and to provide a comfortable working environment. The modern design of the building allows maximum use of natural light and ventilation.

Comprising Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Microbiology and Histopathology, it currently employs over 100 staff. The lab houses state of the art lab equipment throughout.

The lab is active in scientific and medical education. As well as hosting undergraduate students for their in-service year and final year projects, the lab actively encourages and part sponsors post-graduate education for existing staff in both Biomedical science and also in management and leadership.

The laboratory has a robust quality management system and is ISO15189 accredited.

It will shortly be one of the first hospitals to introduce the national MedLIS computer system, which will allow for fully electronic requesting and reporting of results.

In co-operation with the Chief Medical Scientist, medical staff and other co-workers, the post holder will participate in the delivery of a quality laboratory service that supports the clinical needs of Connolly Hospital’s patients and is consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of the organisation.
